Supervisory Responsibilities: None


Position Summary:  Under the supervision of the Corporate Safety & Regulatory Manager the Safety Manager is responsible for the strategic management of Gusmer’s employee safety program and ensuring a culture of safety and compliance at all California locations.  This includes ensuring full compliance with all applicable federal, state and local safety regulations.  Safety activities include recognizing, evaluating, and controlling safety and health hazards in the facility and working with other departments to minimize occupational health and safety risks.


Essential Functions

  • Safety Programs: Plans, coordinates, and directs Safety Programs ensuring that facility operations meet established Cal/OSHA standards.  Work collaboratively with all Gusmer safety team members to create corporate programs and procedures.
  • Safety Teams: Leads safety committee in setting and achieving goals to improve safety of the workforce at each CA location.
  • Safety Training: Conducts and/or coordinates safety training for all California employees in compliance to Cal/OSHA requirements.  Engage workforce in education process and ensure understanding of presented material.  Conducts safety training for all new employees prior to the employee being exposed to any hazards.  Retain training records with training material to show who was trained, when and on what material.
  • Inspect: Work with facility Safety Representatives to inspect facilities, machinery, and safety equipment in order to identify and correct potential hazards, and to ensure safety regulation compliance.  Develop and recommend improvements of facilities, equipment, or procedures to improve safety in the workplace
  • Investigation: Effectively conduct industrial accident, injury, and occupation disease investigations to determine causes.  Work with departments to correct safety hazards and develop preventative procedures.
  • Safety Recordkeeping/Documentation: Ensure all California facilities safety records and regulatory compliance documentation is organized and complies with Federal and State requirements.  Records include, but are not limited to, accident/incident reports, employee training records, chemical inventory list, SDS’, hazard warning labels, OSHA injury/illness forms, annual OSHA reporting documents, equipment hazard assessments, PPE hazard assessments, job hazard analysis’ (JHA), industrial hygiene reports. Notes from attorney calls and other safety related documentation.  Also responsible for creating clearly written safety procedures, observations, sampling results, and recommendations.  Responsible for maintaining information on the Gusmer Injury Summary document for all California locations. Responsible for annual OSHA 300A form along with electronic reporting.
  • Safety Knowledge: Remain technically knowledgeable and current on matters concerning safety at an expert level including Cal/OSHA regulations and applicable Federal and State safety regulations.  Effectively recognize and evaluate safety and health hazards in the facility.

Other Duties

  • Team Participation: Actively participate in Corporate Safety team efforts to achieve team goals.
  • Supplies/Equipment: Manage safety resources and related departmental budgets.  Ensure that adequate supplies of personal protective equipment and emergency equipment/first aid kits are maintained.  Ensure AED is maintained in proper working order. Purchase PPE and safety equipment as required.  Set annual Safety budget for each California location.
  • Training Courses: Create professional training course materials and presentations.  Conduct individual and small to large group training sessions that are clear and engaging.
  • Light Duty: Initiate and coordinate back to work activities including light duty work when appropriate.
  • Assist: Actively assist in other California facilities efforts including assisting GMP Director in ensuring that the plant meets or exceeds environmental requirements of Federal, State and Local Environment Agencies and generating reports and communicating with agencies as required.

Experience and Education Requirements

  • BS in Occupational Health and Safety or related field
  • Minimum 2 years occupational health and safety experience
  • CPR Certified

Other Qualifications

  • Valid Driver’s license with acceptable driving record.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to walk on normal and uneven surfaces and sit; use hands for writing and keyboarding; lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.  The employee is occasionally required to lift, carry, and push up to 25 pounds; stand, stoop and bend.  The employee may occasionally encounter uneven and/or slippery surfaces when in warehouse.

Specific vision abilities required by this job includes close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

Acute hearing is necessary for telephone and in-person communication with customers and fellow employees, and visual acuity sufficient to read a computer screen and paper documents.


Working Conditions

This position typically functions in an office and plant environment.  There will be exposure to moderate noise levels, fumes, dust, chemicals, heat/cold and allergens especially in warehouse environment.
